A talk with former Mayor, Gretchen Wilbert.

A talk with Gretchen Wilbert, Former Mayor of Gig Harbor, was always engaging. One might even say it leads one to break out in song on occassion. On my numerous visits with the former Mayor of Gig Harbor, Gretchen Wilbert, we spoke of the growth and projects she and I had worked on that has provided continued recognition to Gig Harbor. She spoke of her early career working as a kindergarten teacher, as well as serving as Mayor of Gig Harbor 1989-2005.

With much work, comes good results, from the joining with other cities “sister cities” to the sidewalks now in downtown Gig Harbor.

In 2015, her eyes beamed as she poured out her heart, we spoke of our community and what it means to us. With much work, comes good results, from the joining with other cities “sister cities” to the sidewalks now in downtown Gig Harbor. This city, Gig Harbor, has been ‘home sweet home’ to many. As Mayor, Gretchen held steadfast to her dreams for the Gig Harbor community and never gave up. It was with sparkling eyes, I was told the story of Gig Harbor’s song.

Mayor’s Big Band Dinner Dance.

One event held great importance, the Mayor’s Big Band Dinner Dance, to celebrate Gig Harbor’s 50th anniversary. She had organized this event as Mayor Gretchen Wilbert. A memorable piece of the evening was the song written by Laurel Cole titled “Under a Gig Harbor Moon,” a 40s-style ballad.

Mayor Gretchen’s last campaign.

Mayor Gretchen Wilbert maintained her campaign to adopt “Under a Gig Harbor Moon” as Gig Harbor’s song for years. She continued her efforts even after leaving the mayor’s office. “This is my last campaign. So many other cities have songs, Gig Harbor deserves a song,” she then melodically drifted into a couple lines of the song, as her mouth curled into a smile.

Mayor Grethen Wilbert’s Campaign for a Gig Harbor song resulted in music to my ears. The song “Under a Gig Harbor Moon” was adopted by the city after Wilbert’s lifetime. Wilbert died November 15, 2015, at the age of 87.
